Application and Industry Description : Wireless VoIP
Many corporations have multiple remote or branch offices for local sales, marketing and development teams. Typically, these offices are physically small with no onsite IT support. Deploying 802.11 as the primary network is increasingly a viable option as newer standards such as 802.11g has increased speeds to 54Mbps. At the same time, many corporations are adopting voice over IP (VoIP) systems to enjoy lower costs. The two technologies, Wireless LANs (WLANs) and VoIP, together have given rise to an exciting application: Wireless VoIP.

The Wireless VoIP solution consists of Switch, Switch Controller and APs. The APs connect via the backbone L2/L3 network to the Switch Controller and communicate with standard Wi-Fi clients. The Switch Controller delivers the highest level of security available, provides application flow-detection and QoS for SIP, Spectralink and Vocera protocols.

The Wireless VoIP solution makes it easy to roll out voice over Wi-Fi. Voice over Wi-Fi uses voice over IP technology, but instead of a hardwired desk set, allows the use of phones with an embedded Wi-Fi radio, or a laptop or PDA with Wi-Fi running a soft phone application. In the near future, we will be able to purchase cell phones that include Wi-Fi. These phones are designed to find the best network and will switch to Wi-Fi if it is available.

To avoid the unexpected latency and jitter due to the sudden increased density of Wi-Fi clients, the company?s patented technology ensures that voice application are scheduled, prioritized, and have bandwidth reserved dynamically over the air to avoid contention with other data applications.
